ARE YOU A CANADIAN CONSERVATIVE?

7/10/2012

It's clear we're not likely to agree on many things, especially the economy, or how the government should spend it's money. But, as Canadians, we have a good deal in common. We've both believed that the environment should be properly managed. We've both supported the creation of Conservation Areas. We love camping; Algonquin Park, Killarnie, Sharbot Lake, Sauble Beach and our summers by the water. We want clean drinkable water from the tap. We also have no differences when it comes to scientific research. We admire the discoveries we make as a nation and the innovations we've been able to achieve. They become part of our national identity. We support research and education and decisions backed by fact. We had these and many other cultural and social issues in common, that is until now. Harper's Conservatives are a very different breed of Conservative. They've made it plain they have no patience for scientific fact that gets in the way of their Oil Sand, Pipeline Agenda. And they pay only weak lip service to the environment while they gut regulations designed to prevent the despoilment of our water and soil. Does a Conservative believe in the practical preservation of Fish Habitat? You used to. In Environmental Science? You used to. Now it's hard to call yourself a Conservative and still hold these practical responsible views. It's like your party doesn't match your principles anymore. It's like it's become steadily smaller and closed. Harper Conservatives certainly don't espouse your principles of fair-play, prudent spending, fiscal management, or a simple, rational adherence to fact. These are principles we can all agree on. Think again - you're allowed to.
